Colour, Contrast and Perception

Colour, Contrast and Perception Second Edition

Editor: Keith Bright, Geoff Cook and John Harris
Publishers: Research Group for Inclusive Environments, The University of Reading.
Summary: This publication considers the use of colour and luminance contrast in the built environments and the way in which it can affect, both positively and negatively, the ability of visually impaired people to move around the environment and identify features and facilities. It also considers the relationship of lighting with colour and luminance contrast and, importantly, describes which areas within an environment are most suitable in providing information to a visually impaired user. The design guidance, which is identified in the Approved Document to Part M of the Building Regulations and BS 8300:2001, is based on the findings of a substantial questionnaire of visually impaired people and structured laboratory tests.

Testimonials and Review Comments

Foreword to Colour, Contrast and Perception, 1997 and 2003 (2nd Edition)

“This publication will assist those responsible for designing and maintaining buildings to produce designs which are attractive and provide sufficient contrast in an appropriate position to help those with low vision. The principles described in this text sit firmly within the concept on inclusive design or design for all.”
Professor Peter Barker OBE (then) Manager – Joint Mobility Unit, RNIB/GDBA
